Renting a virtual server on Debian

Debian is a server operating system from the UNIX family distributed under the GNU license, which means that it is completely free of charge. Renting a VPS on Debian is a common practice among corporate clients, programmers and developers because this operating system has a lot of advantages in terms of stability, performance and security. Let's take a closer look at the specific pros and cons of this OS.

Advantages of VPS servers on Debian

  1. It has a logical and systematic configuration. All directories in the system are well structured and completely transparent. For example, programs are located at /usr/bin and configuration files at /ets. This makes it easy to navigate and easy to work with.
  2. Unified system settings - just configure VPS Debian once, and the settings are applied to all users according to their level of access.
  3. Fewer resources are needed for the work than on Windows Server. This is due not only to good optimization, but also to the absence of GUI - graphical user interface. Working with this OS is done via console.
  4. Stability and fault tolerance like all Linux-based server OS.
  5. Advanced access rights for ROOT level sysadmins.
  6. Debian Server has one of the best package managers APT (Advanced Packaging Tool).
  7. Lots of packages in the repository - usually everything you need for a comfortable desktop experience is already there.
  8. Compatibility with most current control panels including ISPManager, cPanel, Plesk, Confixx.
  9. Security. First of all, there are not many malicious programs for Linux which minimize the chances of infection. Secondly, this operating system is devoid of many vulnerabilities which are present, for example, in Windows Server.

Debian VPS is great for any task but especially good for running PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby or MySQL based applications. In addition, Debian offers many Open Source applications for hosting, including website builders, blogs, forums, content management systems and more.

Disadvantages of VPS servers on Debian

Despite its many advantages, Debian is not without some disadvantages that you should be aware of:

  1. The OS contains only open-source software. On the one hand, this helps to avoid additional costs and eliminates the possibility of legal problems. On the other hand, open support does not have the best effect on the performance, optimization and functionality of individual applications.
  2. Difficult to master. The lack of an adequate user interface greatly increases the entry threshold, so that a person with experience and knowledge should administer such servers. A person must have a good understanding of the VPS Debian Server file system, security policy, package repository, etc.
  3. Many popular programs are either not supported at all on UNIX-like systems, or have not been updated for years. However, for server distributions, as a rule, everything you need is freely available, and this disadvantage applies more to the user versions of the OS.
  4. There is no backward compatibility with the documents and files from Windows.
  5. Modern server hardware receives support faster on Windows Server, while owners of VPS on Debian sometimes have to wait for the necessary updates for a few months.

Overall, the advantages of leasing VPS servers from Debian largely outweigh the disadvantages, and that is the reason why this OS is so popular. High fault tolerance, reliability, security, and minimization of expenses on licensed software purchases are much more important than a nice GUI. HostZealot offers VPS rental based on one of the four current versions:

  • Debian 9 (x86, x64);
  • Debian 10 (x86, x64).

To get more information and to consult on questions of interest, leave a request on our website. Our specialist will contact you and guide you through the process in more detail.

Your questions, our answers

  • How Debian differs from other Linux distributions?
Debian is different from other Linux distributions in that it is a non-profit, volunteer-driven organization focused on software collaboration and freedom, and on providing the highest quality of software to its users. Debian provides the highest quality of software through its large, diverse, and highly experienced contributor base, and its extensive testing and quality assurance process. Additionally, Debian is well known for its stability, long release cycles, and robust security and privacy policies.
  • How do I reset my Debian VPS password?
    1. Connect to your VPS via VNC (Click here for more details on how to connect via VNC)
    2. Reboot your VPS by pressing Ctrl+Alt+Delete from the VNC Client menu or from the VPS control panel
    3. While booting, press [ESC] several times to abort the autoboot and get to the GRUB menu
GRUB is one of the first items to start during the boot process.
If you skipped the GRUB menu and the server starts booting, you must restart the VPS and start over
    4. In the GRUB boot menu, press [e] to edit the boot item
    5. Find the kernel line starting with "linux /boot/vmlinuz-…" (may slightly vary depending on the OS)
    6. Press [End] to go to the end of the line, add " init=/bin/bash" (without the quotes, with space before init)
Note that the line may not fit the width of the screen and become terminated by the '\' symbol, thus continuing to the line below
    7. Press [Ctrl+X] or [F10] to load
    8. After starting the system you will find yourself at the bash root command line
you can press [Ctrl+L] to clear the screen from messages after booting
    9. Run `mount -o remount, rw /` to remount the root file system in rw-mode with the ability to write
    10. Run `passwd` and follow the instructions to change the root password
    11. Reboot the VPS from the VPS control panel or by pressing "Ctrl+Alt+Delete" in the VNC client menu.
  • How to monitor CPU load in Debian VPS?
The CPU value for an individual process shows how much CPU time the individual process consumed during its allotted clock cycle.

For example. You have 100 processes running, so the CPU will divide the time per unit of time (e.g. one second) among all those processes according to its internal scheduler. If you assume for example that all processes receive equal fractions of time, one process in a second will receive 1/100 of a second (0.01 second],during which it must manage to process its internal task queue.

Therefore, if a process takes 0.005 seconds, it will show up as 50%. If it takes 0.03 seconds you will see 300%. But because other processes usually manage to finish their tasks much faster, these figures are quite acceptable for most systems.

The most important numbers are "load average:" which shows the total CPU load (per minute, 5 minutes and 15 minutes). For a single CPU core the acceptable figure is "1.00", which in this case means that CPU time is 100% allocated (not to be confused with CPU load],respectively for 4 cores the figure would be "4.00". For different systems the load can be considered differently, for you an acceptable load "load average:" can be taken as numbers up to 10-15 (in one minute).

Also indirectly the load of the system can be determined by the delayed execution of commands in the SSH console itself. That is, if you see that commands are processed very slowly (even typing is not going immediately],it is likely that the load is exceeded.

The second important parameter is your memory usage. Using the example of a VPS which is actively using 346 MB of 512 RAM:

    [root@user ~]# free -m

total used free shared buffers cached

    Mem: 1001 994 7 0 4 643

    -/+ buffers/cache: 346 655

    Swap: 2047 0 2047

    [root@user ~]#

You need to be careful that the "used" value does not start to grow larger than the memory allocated to the VPS, as this will cause the Swap memory (which is slower) to be used. In the output of the "top" command, you can see the value of the memory used by each process in the column called "RES" (the columns can be sorted by pressing "O" first, then "q", then "Enter").
  • I want to check the latency to your data centers. How can I do it?
You can check the latency by using our Looking Glass
