VPS AlmaLinux

CentOS has long been a major Linux distribution chosen as a server operating system. While providing most benefits of the commercial Red Hat Enterprise Linux, CentOS is a free distribution. Unfortunately for many CentOS users, Red Hat announced the shift to CentOS Stream which lacked long-term support and some other critical features of the OS. However, this served as an impetus for the development of alternatives, that will share the same basis as CentOS and RHEL, but will be actively developed and supported further. One such alternative that is becoming increasingly spread nowadays is AlmaLinux, which recently has become one of the available Linux distributions offered by HostZealot.

Background

Although CentOS was not discontinued as such, what happened is that in December 2020 Red Hat announced the shift of CenOS from a stable and long-term support distribution to a downstream build of RHEL (Red Hat Enterprise Linux) with a shorter support lifespan. This shift was received critically by the community since took away some of the main CentOS advantages. However, this also created a void to be occupied by something new, and one of these new solutions is AlmaLinux.

AlmaLinux is an alternative community-driven Linux distribution that follows a rolling-release model and focuses on maintaining compatibility with RHEL to ensure a seamless transition for CentOS users.

Features of AlmaLinux VPS Hosting

  • Stability: Like various other Linux distributions, AlmaLinux is in particular praised for its stability. Based on the good old Red Hat codebase that has proven its functionality during the many years of CentOS, AlmaLinux is carefully developed and tested to provide the optimal functioning of the OS.
  • Long-term support: As used to be the case with CentOS, each major release of AlmaLinux is accompanied by long-term support, providing the users with predictable levels of reliability and security.
  • Compatibility: AlmaLinux is designed to be fully compatible with CentOS, so everything that has ever been developed to work on CentOS will also function perfectly well on AlmaLinux.
  • Security: AlmaLinux inherits the level of security that was present on CentOS, accompanied by timely updates and patches that regularly solve arising vulnerabilities and ensure a secure environment for deploying any type of project.
  • Community-driven. Active engagement of the community is a part of the product philosophy of AlmaLinux. The users are encouraged to actively participate in the life of the operating system, which speeds up its development, improves the quality of support, and provides lots of guides and documentation.
  • Commercial support: With AlmaLinux being free and open-source, it’s also supported by the official developer, with special support options for organizations.

As you can see, AlmaLinux can be generally regarded as second wind for the old good CentOS, so in case you used to develop your web projects using CentOS as the operating system, and now you want to migrate your website to something that works pretty much in the same way, is fully compatible with CentOS and is long-term supported, AlmaLinux will be a perfect choice.

Optimizing and Fine-Tuning AlmaLinux

After purchasing an AlmaLinux VPS, there is a variety of ways how to improve its general performance and make it more secure and reliable. Some of them are:

Update and Patch

Make sure to regularly update your OS so it works seamlessly. Use the command:

$ sudo yum update

Kernel Optimization

The kernel is the very basis of a Linux operating system. Optimizing the kernel configuration can lead to improving the overall performance of the system, especially when it comes to specific tasks. To start, edit the /etc/sysctl.conf file to modify kernel parameters:

$ sudo vi /etc/sysctl.conf

Some common kernel parameters to consider:

  • vm.swappiness: Adjusts the tendency of the system to use swap space.
  • net.core.somaxconn: Sets the maximum number of connections that can be queued for accepting on a listening socket.
  • fs.file-max: Specifies the maximum number of file handles that the kernel can allocate.

After the changes are made, apply them with the command:

$ sudo sysctl -p

Resource Allocation

Fine-tining the use of the server resources is another way of fine-tuning the server performance. ou can modify settings such as CPU shares, memory limits, and I/O priorities using tools like cgroups and systemd.

File System Optimization

By wisely choosing the file system of your OS, you can optimize the system for your workloads making storage usage more effective. For example, using a journaling file system like ext4 or XFS with appropriate mount options can improve performance and reliability.

Service Optimization

Review and optimize the services running on your AlmaLinux system. Disable unnecessary services that consume system resources and enable only those required for your specific use case. Services can be managed using systemd.

Firewall Configuration

Ensure that your firewall is properly configured to allow required incoming and outgoing network traffic while blocking unauthorized access. AlmaLinux uses firewalld firewall by default, and you can manage firewall rules using the firewall-cmd command.

Enterprise Storage for AlmaLinux

On HostZealot you can choose between all common enterprise storage solutions – HDD, SSD, or NVMe, depending on the specific preferences of your project.

HDD drives are the old-school storage type that is based on rotating magnetic that store the information mechanically. While always coped well with its tasks, newer SSD drives perform better than HDD drives in all aspects: they work faster since they are based on microchips and they wear out slowlier and produce less noise and heat due to the absence of moving parts, and consume less electricity. The aspect where HDD drives still outperform SSD is the price.

NVMe drives are SSD drives based on the more advanced specially designed high-speed interface that allows for even better performance of the storage, but for a higher price tag as well.

Each drive suits better for certain scenarios.

  • HDD drives are good when you need terabytes of storage, you don’t want to spend too much on it while the storage performance is secondary.
  • SSD drives are good when the storage performance matters, which is the case for an average website of quality today, especially a commercial one designed for dealing with lots of daily visitors.
  • NVMe drives are needed for special cases where the storage performance is exceptionally critical, especially storage-intensive solutions that have to do with big data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

Complete Administrative Access to AlmaLinux

Opting for AlmaLinux VPS by HostZesalot you will get complete administrative access to your VPS, meaning that you’ll be able to install anything you want and fine-tune it as you see fit. This is made possible by KVM virtualization, a quality hypervisor-based hardware-level virtualization solution that allows you to benefit from your VPS to the fullest, with fully dedicated resources and full independence from other users on the parental server.

Availability of Control Panels

The control panel is an essential tool for managing the server of your website. On HostZealot you have a broad selection of available control panel solutions, including Vesta CP, Virtualmin, ISPmanager, DirectAdmin, and WHM/cPanel. Thie features:

  1. Vesta CP: Free and open-source, it offers a user-friendly interface with basic management features. Suitable for simple management tasks but lacks enterprise-like capabilities.
  2. Virtualmin: Part of the Webmin/Virtualmin/Usermin suite, it provides extensive configuration options through a web interface. Offers full control over server settings but can be complex to use, requiring Linux knowledge.
  3. ISPmanager: A commercial panel with a low price tag, it covers a decent range of features. Offers additional functions like Nginx as a caching web server, web scripts, and social network integration. Moderately user-friendly but may have some issues with importing users or updating.
  4. DirectAdmin: Known for stability, it includes basic control panel features with detailed configuration options. Recommended for advanced users managing individual projects, but it may have compatibility issues during upgrades.
  5. WHM/cPanel: Widely used and popular, it is an enterprise-level panel with comprehensive features. Provides extensive server configuration, advanced security, and backup plans. Requires more resources but offers excellent stability and support.
