A grand data center that will become the world's most powerful facility of its kind for artificial intelligence systems is planned to be built in South Korea. Its capacity will be an impressive 3 gigawatts.
The Scope and Cost of the Project
The implementation of this ambitious project will require an investment of $35 billion. The construction is expected to be completed by 2028. By this time, the data center should reach the declared capacity of 3 GW. This is almost three times the estimated capacity of the Texas facility funded by OpenAI and SoftBank Group.
Technological Features
Currently, it is rare to find facilities with more than 1 gigawatt of AI chips’ capacity. This figure is influenced by the availability of electricity and its high consumption by AI models. Nevertheless, the power consumption of AI models will continue to grow and may reach 5 gigawatts in 2030.
The new data center in South Korea will be equipped with advanced cooling systems that will allow for efficient heat dissipation from powerful equipment. It is also planned to provide high bandwidth for data exchange both within the region and internationally. Particular attention will be paid to the ability of the data center to cope with significant fluctuations in power, which is critical to ensuring the stable operation of AI systems.
Importance of the Project for AI Development
The creation of such a powerful data center will be an important step towards the development of artificial intelligence. It will provide the necessary computing resources for the training and operation of complex neural networks, which will contribute to the emergence of new breakthrough technologies in the field of AI.
