Western Digital Says Goodbye to SSDs: The Future Belongs to SanDisk

Western Digital (WD), a brand known for its reliable storage solutions, is stepping away from the SSD market. The company has officially completed the separation of its NAND memory division, passing the reins to SanDisk. Moving forward, WD will focus exclusively on hard disk drives (HDDs).
WD’s CEO, Irving Tan, shared his vision for the company’s future:
"Our long history of HDD innovation has defined us for decades. Now, we can fully concentrate on delivering the best storage solutions for our customers."
While businesses and professionals who need massive storage capacities will continue relying on WD, gamers may feel the loss. WD’s SSDs, especially models like the WD Black SN850X, were a top choice for gaming PCs.
What Happens Next?
Despite WD’s exit, SSD production isn’t stopping—it’s just shifting under the SanDisk name. In fact, SanDisk has been managing WD’s SSD operations since last year. This transition was officially announced in October 2023, making it more of a formality than a surprise.
As for manufacturing, there won’t be major changes. WD never owned NAND production facilities, relying instead on Kioxia (formerly Toshiba). SanDisk will likely continue this partnership or explore alternatives like Samsung.
For consumers, the main difference will be branding. New SSDs will no longer carry the WD logo, which raises an interesting question—will SanDisk successfully position itself as a top-tier SSD brand, or will its name continue to be associated mainly with memory cards?
