Qualcomm has acquired the generative AI division of VinAI, a Vietnam-based AI research company headquartered in Hanoi. The financial details of the deal remain undisclosed. This acquisition reinforces Qualcomm’s commitment to artificial intelligence and its continued expansion into AI-driven technologies.

VinAI, founded in 2019 by former DeepMind researcher Hung Bui, specializes in generative AI, computer vision, and language models. The company focuses primarily on AI-powered automotive solutions, such as in-cabin monitoring, safety systems, and smart parking. By integrating VinAI’s expertise, Qualcomm aims to enhance its ability to develop advanced AI solutions for various industries.

Expanding AI Applications

VinAI employs approximately 200 people across offices in Hanoi, the United States, and Australia. With this acquisition, Qualcomm plans to incorporate VinAI’s technologies into its software and hardware, including solutions for smartphones, PCs, and automotive applications.

Hung Bui, who served as VinAI’s CEO, will transition to Qualcomm following the acquisition. His team’s expertise in generative AI and machine learning is expected to accelerate Qualcomm’s AI development efforts.

This deal marks Qualcomm’s second AI-related acquisition in 2025, following its purchase of the German company Edge Impulse in March. The company continues to focus on edge AI, which enables AI processing directly on devices without relying on cloud infrastructure.
