Oracle plans to build SMR nuclear reactors with a capacity of 1 GW

It has become public that Oracle already has a permit for the construction of 3 modular reactors (SMRs) that will be used to power AI. At the moment, it is planned that the power will be enough for units with a capacity of 1 GW or more.

The construction announcement was made during the quarterly financial report. The nuclear reactors will be quite small compared to traditional reactors at nuclear power plants. The construction of 3 SMRs will not require a large infrastructure, and the construction costs are not expected to be enormous.

There are currently no exact plans for the start and end of the project, the most realistic scenario is that this power source will be launched in 2030, at least before that year the company will definitely not launch its promising SMR technology project.

Of course, this technology has significant advantages, but experts also emphasize certain risks, such as significant construction costs, time-consuming implementation, and the fact that it will not be able to cover the fuel switch fully.

Despite the conclusions of financial analysts, big business is still planning to use nuclear reactors. For example, Microsoft has shown interest in SMR technology and has hired experts to monitor trends. Amazon, meanwhile, has already purchased a data center from Talen Energy, and this facility is located near a 2.5 GW nuclear power plant.
