Incident on Finnish Territory
Swedish television (SVT) reported two new internet cable ruptures between Sweden and Finland. According to Global Connect, the incidents disrupted connections for approximately 6,000 households and hundreds of business clients. The issues occurred in Espoo and Vihti. The first rupture has been repaired, while work on the second is ongoing.
The Finnish police are investigating the incident as a potential sabotage. Sweden's Minister of Civil Defense, Carl-Oskar Bolin, stated that the governments of both countries are cooperating with relevant agencies. Finland's Minister of Communications, Lulu Ranne, emphasized that the situation is being taken very seriously.
Previous Damages in the Baltic Sea
In mid-November, two underwater cables were severed in the Baltic Sea—one between Finland and Germany (C-Lion-1) and another between Sweden and Lithuania.
Both incidents are being investigated as interference with communication infrastructure under aggravated circumstances.
According to The Wall Street Journal on November 28, investigators suspect the Chinese vessel Yi Peng 3 of intentionally damaging the cables. The crew allegedly dragged an anchor along the seabed, causing the ruptures.
