At DesignCon 2025, Micron revealed the first PCIe 6.0 drive utilizing the Astera Scorpio PCIe 6.0 networking device. The sequential read speed of this device was able to reach a record 27GB/s per drive. This performance is significantly higher than that of PCIe 5.0. This speed was achieved thanks to the combination of 2 Micron PCIe 6.0 SSDs and Nvidia H100.

PCIe 6.0 SSD release announcement

During the exhibition, the drive was presented at the Astera Labs stand. And Micron confirmed that it was this device that experts had been working on since the end of last summer. The announced read speed was 26 back then, but the actual speed reached 27.12 GB/s.

At this stage, the fastest read performance has been achieved by PCIe 5.0 SSDs with a read speed of only 14.5 GB/s.

These record-breaking speeds were achieved using a PCIe 6.0 switch. This switch utilizes Magnum IO GPUDirect (GDS) and operates at high communication rates between the GPU, CPU, and storage.
