Breakthrough in Artificial Intelligence Training
IBM has announced a significant breakthrough in artificial intelligence (AI) training technology thanks to optical computing. This innovation can significantly speed up the data processing process, reduce power consumption, and increase the efficiency of complex algorithms. According to the company, by using this technology, energy consumption can be reduced by annual consumption of 5 thousand US households.
It was also mentioned that data centers still use copper wires, which require a lot of time to connect devices, and with time, a lot of energy.
Optical Computing: What Is It?
Optical computing uses light signals instead of traditional electronic signals. This makes it possible to process data at the speed of light and eliminates the interference inherent in electrical conductors. IBM's new technology promises to be an important step in the development of AI, allowing it to solve tasks that were previously considered too complex or costly.
Benefits for Neural Networks
Traditional methods of training neural networks require significant computing resources and a lot of energy. With the use of optical systems, training can become faster and more affordable. IBM emphasizes that their technology reduces heat and can be integrated into existing infrastructure.
Describing their co-packet optics (CPO) prototype, IBM Senior Vice President and Research Director Dario Gil said that this patent will help chips interact with each other like fiber optic cables that transmit data to and from data centers, thereby creating a connection that is many times faster and more stable.
How Does It Work?
CPO adjusts the density of interconnects between accelerators, thereby increasing bandwidth by 80 times, resulting in six times more optical fibers and higher performance in chips. Thus, the use of CPO can minimize downtime in data centers and significantly speed up the processing of AI tasks.
Challenges and Prospects for Implementation
Despite the obvious advantages, the technology requires further refinement and testing. IBM experts admit that the integration of optical systems into everyday applications may take several years, but they are confident in its potential to change the rules of the game in the field of artificial intelligence.
