On December 25, it became known that there was a problem with the transmission of electricity through a cable connecting Estonia and Finland. During the accident, there were two ships near the Estlink 2 line, which fortunately were not damaged.

The Finnish company Fingrid reports several possible causes and one of them is the possibility of a terrorist attack. The damage to the power cable occurred at 12:26 on Christmas Day. The power output at the time of the outage was approximately 658 megawatts. But the search for specific problems with the cable continued the next day.

What ships were located in the accident area?

One of the ships that was at the place of the lost connection was the Eagle S (under the flag of Cook Island), and the other was the Xin Xin Tian 2 (under the flag of Hong Kong).

The Finnish authorities stated that this damage would not affect the power supply to the homes of local residents. The case is still under investigation, so it is too early to provide specific information about the accident.

Finnish media report that Estlink 1 cable is more important, so no significant impact is expected. Estonia and Finland own these 2 power lines simultaneously. The total length of the damaged cable is 170 km and most of it lies on the seabed.
