According to information from Reuters, OpenAI's work on an AI chip is coming to a logical conclusion. An initial testing phase is planned next, and TSMC from Taiwan will be used for mass production. With the collaboration between OpenAI and TSMC, the chip will be manufactured on a 3-nanometer process, and mass availability is planned for 2026.
What team is working on the project?
The new chip will be able to run and train AI models and 40 professionals are working on the project with Richard Ho. In addition, the team is collaborating with Broadcom to achieve the best possible result.
Some experts are quite critical of such a small team of engineers. Since, most often, such large-scale projects require hundreds of specialists.
There is a great possibility that OpenAI is developing a new product for the purpose of further negotiations with suppliers. At the moment, Nvidia occupies the top position in the AI chip market. Other market giants include Meta, Amazon, and Microsoft.
The demand for AI chips is constantly growing and therefore many companies are investing significant sums in AI infrastructure. OpenAI, in its turn, participates in the Stargate program.
