In the second half of this year, TSMC plans to launch production of a two-nanometer chip.

A significant step towards improved performance

The Taiwanese company is working on a technology that is slightly different from the chips in household devices, smartphones, and computers. The new chips are made by applying layers of electronic microchips and etching the substrate materials. Billions of small transistors are used to control the flow of electricity.

High power and significant speed of computing operations were achieved by increasing the number of transistors. The goal now is to accommodate as many transistors as possible. Compared to the previous 3nm chip, the new generation chip should provide 10-15% higher computing speed with the same power. The density of transistors in 2-nm chips is higher, which will lead to better energy efficiency of gadgets.

TSMC microchips are used in many devices. For example, for Apple's A-series processors and Nvidia's GPUs. In addition, the company also produces Qualcomm Snapdragon, AMD Ryzen, and EPYC processors.

The size of TSMC chips has been gradually reduced from 5 to 2 nanometers. Gadgets with 2-nm chips may have better performance and longer battery life. This may lead to a reduction in the size of devices. Also, new chips have significant potential for AI applications.

In the production of new chips, there may be some difficulties with the use of extreme ultraviolet lithography. Also, due to the increased density of transistors, heat dissipation may become a problem.
